Week 8 news
I have spent this week in Christchurch being inspired at the annual NZPF conference. One of the most inspirational speakers was a 15-year-old who was a finalist in the Ngā manu kōrero speech competition. He urged us to try and use reo, to take a risk when using Māori, to give it ago. We should not just use reo because of te wiki o te reo Māori, but every day!
Property update 🦺
The hoardings and fences have been erected in preparation for the demolition to progress. We have lost playground space, but as usual, the children are flexible and resilient and are used to changing the way we play. The bell cairn framing has been built and we are excited to get this piece of history back on site.
Kaikorai's newest published authors ✍🏻
We are thrilled to see Theo, Noah, Levi, James, and Joseph published in the national newspaper Extra! (See the photos below). Their persuasive writing debating whether the desexing and microchipping of cats should be compulsory caught the editor's eye. Tino pai tō mahi boys!
The week ahead 📆
You can expect to hear from your child's teacher on a Sunday with a snapshot of the week ahead. This is beneficial, so you can help prepare your children for what is coming up, have a kōrero about their learning and ensure you are well informed of what is happening at Kaikorai School. I hope you find these Sunday briefings useful.

Production 🎭
It's almost time for our school production ~ Do you believe in magic? The teachers and students have been working hard to learn their dances, practice lines, songs, and dance for the big finale! A huge thanks to Maggie's mum Nic who has shared her expertise in dance and drama with many of the classes. Are you able to help also?
Please read the article for information about performance times and ticket sales and where you can help!
Covid response framework 😷
Please know we will support you and your child if you wear a mask at school. Our air purifiers are still humming away in all the spaces, windows are open to allow airflow, and we will continue to monitor the C02 levels in our teaching spaces.
Otago Polyfest 2022
Kaikorai's Tuakana Kapa Haka rōpu had the opportunity to participate in this year's Otago Polyfest held at the Edgar Centre today. Their performance was polished, and our tamariki looked and sounded great as a group! Well done Kapa Haka rōpu! A big thank you to Danya, our Kapa Haka leader, and Mrs McDowall for organising the event. Some photos are attached, but there will be more to come in a future newsletter!
Kaik Kiwis ✏
We will be resuming our Kaik Kiwis programme in Term 4. Visits for our 4-year-olds who begin school in Term 1 2023 are welcome to attend.
Visits will be Wednesdays (weeks 2-4-6-8) 2:00 pm - 2:45 pm in Miss Dunn's class. This is a perfect opportunity to meet some new families, for your child to meet new friends and learn about how school works. Please email cdunn@kaikorai.school.nz if you want more information or book your child's place.
National Public Holiday 👑
Kaikorai School will be closed on Monday, 26th September (week 10 of term 3) to mourn the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.
