Welcome to Term 3

Welcome to Term 3

Welcome back

I hope you have had a safe, warm and healthy winter break, and your children are ready for another great Kaikorai term of learning.

A special warm welcome to our newest Kaikorai kids - Ada, Tori, Bree, Corin, Nisal, Lucy, Laisenia, Lorna and Peter.  We are so happy you are here. ✨

Keeping well at Kaikorai

For Term 3, the Ministries of Health and Education strongly recommend students Year 4 and above wear masks indoors for the next four weeks of term.

We have child and adult size masks at school and we will be asking all senior children to wear a mask when indoors and where practicable (ie not when they are eating).

If there is a reason why your child will not be wearing a mask, please let us know. Otherwise we will assume that your child is able to wear a mask, and we will provide one if they do not have one with them.

If your child displays cold/flu-like symptoms, you will be asked to keep them at home or collect them from school if they arrive unwell. Please notify us if there is Covid-19 in your home or if your child tests positive. We still need to notify the MOE weekly of our case numbers.

You are welcome to come on-site; please continue wearing a mask.

We will continue to be well ventilated in our spaces and use the  Co2 monitors in each class.

Staffing news

Nau mai haere mai ki Kaikorai Kura, Miss Portia Parmenter, who has taken over from Harriet in Rūma toru. Also, to  Susie Clarke, who is our new office superstar.  You will see Susie in the office on Wednesdays alongside Sharon and on Thursdays and Fridays. It is great to have you as part of our team here at Kaikorai.

Term 3 focus 🎭

Our Term 3 focus is an Arts focus - a spotlight on dance, drama and music 🎶 culminating in our school production in the last week of term.

Do you have an interest or skills in the arts?  Can you help in any way? Please reach out to me or Miss Hardie (rhardie@kaikorai.school.nz) if this sounds like something you are interested in!

This term, we are excited to host our class assemblies again; if you are unsure when your child's class assembly is or any other important dates in our calendar, have a look at our school website calendar.

We have a parent literacy evening in Week 2. You may have noticed there is a lot of talk about structured literacy, or the books coming home with your child or their spelling words seem 'easier'. I encourage you to come along and listen to the teachers and myself share the Kaikorai structured literacy journey. Find out what this means for you and your child and how they learn to read.

Tuesday 2nd August 6:30 pm in the school hall.

Property update

The asbestos was successfully removed over the holiday break which means the building work can resume. Some ashphelting will occur shortly which will give us more play space. Demolition of the hall and the old junior block will likely be within the next 6 weeks, we will update you once dates are confirmed.

KAIK school values

You will notice some new posters around the school. Our values remain the same, but the imagery is reflective of our school. Te Whānaupaki  (Flagstaff) is the maunga we see from our school, the bird life is the ones that visit us, and we plan to replant the kōwhai that were removed in the rebuild. Staff and students were involved in developing these concepts. Click the link at the bottom of the page to have a look at the posters.

BOT elections

You will have received a nomination form in the mail. Please reach out to our presiding member (board chair) Dougal McGowan if you have any questions about being on the Board of Trustees, the expectations, the level of commitment and the experience needed. dougalmcgowan@gmail.com

I look forward to another busy, engaging and fun term at Kaikorai.

As always, please get in touch if I can help in any way. I'll see you at the gate on Monday morning! 👋🏻
