The Role of the Deputy Principal and SENCO

Who Am I?

My name is Kristen Ferguson, and I am the Deputy Principal and the Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) at Kaikorai.

I have been an educator for nearly 20 years, and this is my 13th year at Kaikorai Primary. My passion for education stems from believing that every child deserves an inclusive learning environment where they feel safe and happy.

Personally, as a mum of two primary-aged children—one with additional needs—I understand the reality of balancing family life. I relate closely to the experience of navigating extra support for learning or social challenges.

Understanding My Roles

I wear two "hats" at school, and I want to make sure you know what that means for your child:

As Deputy Principal, I support Beth and the Team Leaders in the leadership and management of the school. I focus on school culture, teaching and learning and behavioural/pastoral support.

As SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator), I focus on our diverse learners. My job is to ensure that students who think or learn differently get the support they need to thrive. This involves identifying needs and working with teachers to identify students who may need extra help with literacy, numeracy, or social-emotional regulation. I coordinate the support in classrooms by organising teacher aides, intervention programs, and Individual Education Plans (IEPs). I am also the bridge between the school and outside specialists (such as Speech-Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists or RTLBs).

I am also the Drama Club teacher and Choir director.

Future Newsletter Articles

Approximately 3 times a term, I like to share knowledge and resources with our wider community through a newsletter dedicated to special education and wellbeing, such as neurodiversity and social-emotional learning.

Even if your child does not have a specific diagnosis, these insights are often helpful for understanding all children and fostering a more inclusive community.

How Can I Support You?

I am always happy to have a kōrero with you. If you have a concern, please reach out, and I am more than happy to support you. Especially if:

  • You are worried your child is falling behind academically, and standard classroom support doesn't seem to be enough.

  • Your child has a diagnosis (such as Dyslexia, ADHD, or Autism), and you want to ensure the school has the right strategies in place.

  • There are significant changes at home that might impact your child’s emotional well-being at school.
