Wellbeing Summer Wishes
Here are some ideas to help keep things calm, connected, and enjoyable over the break.
As parents, caregivers and whānau, you are the anchor for your child and your wellbeing matters. When you look after yourself, everyone benefits.
Make Space for You - Give yourself permission to rest when you need to. Ask for help from family or friends, book a babysitter for a few hours, or create small pockets of quiet time while the kids play independently.
Protect Your Routines - Daily habits such as walking, reading, or morning exercise can help keep you grounded during the busy festive season.
Reduce Holiday Stress - Spread out tasks like grocery shopping or organising Christmas activities so they don’t pile up at once. Planning ahead can make the holidays feel far more manageable.
Keep Things Predictable - Children feel safest when they know what to expect. Visual schedules or simple “plans for the day” can make transitions easier.
Prep for Travel and Changes - If your whānau is heading away, involve your children in packing, talk about what the trip will look like, or create a countdown calendar to help them feel in control.
Set Clear Boundaries - Holiday rules can be more flexible—but be clear about what’s different and what will return to normal in the new year. Consistency helps reduce stress for everyone.
Holiday Activity Ideas 🏖️
Having a few go-to activities ready can turn long days into fun opportunities for creativity and connection. Try:
Backyard picnics or water play
Baking (let the kids choose the recipe!)
Crafting Christmas or summer decorations
Lego challenges
Fort building
Nature scavenger hunts
Writing letters, stories, or holiday cards
Donating clothes or toys they have outgrown
Visiting local parks, beaches, or libraries
Simple activities often make the most meaningful memories.
