Pīwakawaka Hapori news
What an action packed term we have had in the Pīwakawaka hapori! Everyone can now enjoy a very well deserved break.
Some of the highlights of this term were:
Polyfest
Our performance at Polyfest was outstanding! The children practiced hard, overcame some nerves, and made us proud up there on that huge stage! Thank you to the whānau who came and supported us.
Thank you to the craft group for donating funds for our new Pīwakawaka headbands, and Sam Gittoes for sewing them for us!
Read-a-thon activities
The read-a-thon was a huge success, not just because of the amount of money raised for literacy resources for the school, but also because of the reading that took place throughout. Lots of children achieved the reading goal they set, and everyone enjoyed reading with their buddy class and our whole school reading session in the learning streets.
Keep up the great reading over the holidays!
Swimming
The children enjoyed our 8 days of swimming, and the swimming instructors were impressed with the huge amount of progress the children made. There was lots of swimming art and swimming writing happening at the same time so the swimming learning continued outside of the pool as well!
Art sessions with visiting artist, Whaea Rachael
Whaea Rachael had one session with each class in the school. She taught the Pīwakawaka children a technique where you draw on a flat surface with felt pens, spray it with water, then press paper on top. The felt pen transfers onto the paper like magic! The children loved learning from Whaea Rachael, and are excited to bring home their art work to share with their whanau one day soon.
Hungerball sessions
The children were very lucky to have some additional Hungerball sessions this term. Hungerball is a football based game where everyone can get involved. We were impressed with the team work, fair play, and attacking and defending skills we saw.
PBL
Our Pīwakawaka hapori have been busy exploring the different strands of The Arts. Over the past two terms we have enjoyed crafting beautiful art works, playing musical instruments, dancing, and performing mini plays within our classes. We are looking forward to launching our new project next term as we unpack the question of ‘How can movement, relationships, and healthy choices work together to support hauora across our school community?.
If you have some expertise in any areas of hauora, such as exercise, physical activity, health, nutrition, mental health or hygiene, and you could contribute in some way, please email Imogen Youngs at iyoungs@kaikorai.school.nz
Calendar Art
Each child has produced a piece of art to be made into a calendar or diary. A photo of your child's artwork has already been shared with you via seesaw, and calendars etc will be on sale for you to purchase early in Term 4.
