Week 7 news

Week 7 news

Welcome to Khloe and Elira - we are so happy you are here ⭐

The leadership team visited Holy Family School in Wānaka this week to learn about their 4-year journey in structured literacy. We were lucky enough to see demonstration lessons, look at assessment data and kōrero about their journey over time. This visit has reaffirmed for us that the structured literacy approach is an approach that works for ALL but is ESSENTIAL for some learners. We know that we have 'dipped our toes in' but we will continue to refine and strengthen our practice in the years ahead. Structured literacy is evidence-based and uses the science of reading to inform practice, not leaving anything to chance. We are excited about the next steps for the Kaikorai ākonga (learners) and kaiako (teachers).

Next week from Tuesday, I am away in Christchurch at the NZPF conference. Kristen, our DP, will be acting principal in my absence. Please reach out to her if you need to get in touch.

A famous author visits 📝

We were very excited to have Swapna Haddow visit all syndicates this week and complete writing workshops. Swapna entertained and engaged our learners with tales about her books, the characters and how to engage the reader when writing.

Production tickets for sale 🎭

Tickets go on sale from Tuesday the 13th of September from the school office from 8:30 am until 4:00 pm each school day. Tickets are $5 each (cash only) and will be available until sold out.

Polyfest 🎸

Our tuakana kapa haka rōpu will perform at Polyfest on Friday, 16th September at 12:45pm. I hope you can get to the Edgar Centre to watch the performance.

Parent group ❄

Thanks so much to Carolyn from the Parents Group, who organised a freezer from Smith City. Smiths generously donated this freezer, which will be a game changer for us in our kitchen.

Keep your eyes peeled for a promo code you can use for a discount at Smiths City soon.

Jump Jam success 💃🏻

It is exciting to announce our Year 5-6 jump jammers have been invited to compete at the Jump Jam national competition in Christchurch in November. We will have a pyjama day and sausage sizzle fundraiser on the last day of the term to help with costs.

Wig Wednesday success 👩👨🏼‍

Thank you for supporting the child cancer foundation; we raised $270 from our online platform (it's not too late to donate) and $326 in gold coin donations on the day.

Property news 🦺

Asbestos removal is to occur next week. Please see the notice below. Fences and hoardings will be erected next week from the backfield to the old junior block. We will still have access to the new playground for a few weeks yet. The second storey has begun on the new build which is exciting to see, this will house the staff room and teacher workrooms.
