Week 3 Principal's news
Snow days and late starts ❄
If in the event of snow, or even sometimes extreme frosts a decision to either close schools or delay starts is made in a blanket decision across Dunedin schools. If this was to occur, the best place to get the most up-to-date information is The Hits Radio station and Facebook page.
As soon as a notice comes through to us, we will send a message on SeeSaw, post on our own Facebook page and send a newsletter.
Attendance ✏
The Ministry of Education is working with schools across New Zealand to improve attendance rates. School attendance is linked to both student well-being and attainment for our tamariki. Being at school and on time ready for learning are strong factors for success.
The MOE is automatically notified of any children who have been unjustifiably absent (this includes holidays in term time) for 5 days in a term. This is a nationwide initiative.
Please ensure you notify the office if your child is away from school, including the reason for their absence.
Staffing news 👩🏻🏫
We are excited to have Hannah Mitchell join the office team; Hannah will work Thursdays and Fridays.
Becky Busfield is joining the learning support team and will support our newest learners in Rūma waru.
Welcome to the team, Becky and Hannah.
We farewell Mike Bradshaw, our caretaker, in the next few weeks and thank him for his service and dedication to Kaikorai over the last ten years.
The NED show 🎤
On Monday 7th August, The NED Show is coming to our school hall. The NED Show is an interactive, 45-minute all-school performance. They use storytelling, yoyo tricks, humour and audience participation to simplify big ideas about behaviour and character, presenting them in a way children understand and remember. The performer will engage our students in a story about NED running into a tricky situation where he must overcome obstacles, make good choices, and have a positive attitude to succeed. With some help from the audience, NED learns kindness, perseverance, and diligence. Throughout his adventures, NED realises there’s a Champion in everyone!
Although there is no fee for the show, they have a unique Pay-It-Forward option. On the day of the show, the performer brings a selection of NED messaged items – primarily yo-yos like the ones used in the assembly. They ask that the school make them available for families to purchase for 5 school days following the performance. This Pay-It-Forward model allows them to visit more schools and reinforce the NED message with other students.
Products from the NED Show will be available to purchase for CASH ONLY Monday to Friday next week. Mrs Ferguson will visit each classroom daily to allow students to purchase items from the show. An order form would have gone home with your child yesterday or today. You must have this form filled out and brought back with the correct amount of cash for your child to buy a product. Your child will receive the product on the day they pay.
Active August 🚶🏻♀️
How does it work?
During Term 3, all children will be given a card; every time they walk or wheel to and/or from school, they can get their card marked. Once they have walked or wheeled ten times, children can exchange this for a Scout sticker and a new card, and then the completed card goes into the draw to win a spot prize.
Milo at the School Gate
Scout will visit our school on Thursday, the 10th of August, from 8:30 am-9:00 am and provide milo to children who walk or wheel to school. Please send along a plastic cup on the 10th of August if you would like your child to participate.
Winter Walk to School Day
Winter Walk to School Day will be held on Wednesday, the 16th of August. The theme for this day is Wacky Hats. Wear your wackiest hat to win a prize for the best hat.
Families can win one of three $50 Otago Sports Depot vouchers by sending their wacky hat competition photos to transport@dcc.govt.nz by Wednesday, 23 August 2023.
