Term 4, Week 3 Principal's News 24/10/25

Strike 🪧

Thank you to those who have sent messages of support during this week's industrial action. Back Our Future I Kimi Haeata is about educators coming together because we want the best for tamariki and each other. Let's hope we see some positive progress in the near future.

Everyday Matters - attendance ✔️

We have received the termly attendance breakdown from the MOE for Kaikorai in Term 3. The most significant concern is 23% of our absences in Term 3 are due to families taking their children on holiday in term time.

I'm pleased to report that our lateness to school has reduced this term since we shared the cumulative impact of being late.

Some key messages

1. Regular attendance at school helps build and maintain a child's learning and positive daily habits and routines, as well as promoting their wellbeing by connecting them to their peers and learning new things.

2. We want our ākonga to thrive and be resilient and active members within their whānau and community.

3. Attendance matters, and we can all work together to increase school attendance.

Please take a look at the data snapshot in the photos.

Student Teachers 🍎

This week and next, Kaikorai Primary School is hosting seven student teachers from the University of Otago - Dunedin College of Education. We are delighted to welcome students from both first- and second-year programmes and are committed to sharing our professional knowledge and expertise to support their training.

Earthquake Drill 🚨

Last week, we participated in the NZ Shakeout. We went through the 60-second drill of Drop, Cover, Hold. I strongly encourage you to continue this conversation at home. Please take a moment with your family to discuss the Drop, Cover, Hold drill and identify the safest places in your house to use as shelter in the event of an earthquake.

Enjoy the long weekend! We're hoping for a stretch of calm, uneventful weather for all.

Ngā manaakitanga
