Opportunities at Kaikorai
We want every student to discover their unique strengths and build confidence. We have so much on offer for our students. Here are some of the things going on:
🏆 The Kaik World Cup Football Tournament
Inspired by the recent FIFA World Cup, we recently held our very own Kaik World Cup right here at school! The tournament was an absolute blast, filled with close matches, great skills, and fantastic sportsmanship. It was awesome seeing everyone working together as a team and cheering loudly from the sidelines. Massive thanks to one of our wonderful teacher aide, Alex, for organising this event!
🪚 The EDGE Workshop
For the second year running, we have had the Boys’ Brigade EDGE Workshop come to our school every fortnight. This program focuses on leadership, teamwork, and practical life skills. Through hands-on challenges and interactive team activities, students learn how to problem-solve, support their peers, and step up as positive role models.
🏉 Sense Rugby
This term, some of our students got involved with Sense Rugby. This is a wonderful, inclusive program designed to ensure all children can experience being part of a team. Run by trained occupational therapists, Sense Rugby uses rugby-based activities to help students develop motor skills, build social connections, and improve emotional regulation in a supportive, low-stress environment.
🏃♂️Junior PMP (Perceptual Motor Programme)
Our Junior students are absolutely loving their PMP sessions, which run twice a week! This program is fantastic for helping our youngest learners develop their coordination, balance, fitness, and memory through fun, active movement circuits. A big thank you to our amazing teacher aide, Tracey, for running this program, and a huge shoutout to all of our parent helpers—these sessions couldn't go ahead without your hands-on support each week!
🎙️ School Council
Our School Council has been hard at work making sure our students have a real say in how things are run! This great group of young leaders meets regularly to brainstorm school initiatives, share ideas from their classmates, and plan fun community events—like our recent Little Miracles Day. It is fantastic seeing them step up, take responsibility, and get a real taste of leadership in action.
👟 PALS (Physical Activity Leaders)
Our PALS are doing an amazing job keeping our lunchtimes active and energetic! These trained student leaders dedicate their breaks to organising and running fun playground games for our younger students. They are doing a brilliant job fostering inclusion, kindness, and active play.
🕺 Jump Jam
Jump Jam is always a huge hit at our school. It’s all about high energy, great music, and getting the kids moving. It is a fantastic way for them to build up their fitness and coordination while having a blast dancing with their mates.
🤟 Sign Language Club
In this club, students are learning the fundamentals of New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL), taught by our own teacher aide, Mrs Barnes, who is now fluent in the language. It is a great way for our students to explore a new language, appreciate diverse ways of communicating, and build a more inclusive school culture.
🌿 Kapa Haka
Our Kapa Haka group continues to be a massive part of our school culture, and it’s wonderful seeing our students come together to learn waiata and performance skills. All of our Junior students have the opportunity to be part of this during the week, while for our Middle and Senior students, it is an opt-in group. Through Kapa Haka, students are developing a connection to te ao Māori and a real sense of whanaungatanga (belonging) together. A huge thank you to Whaea Ana for leading us in this space!
🎵 Orchestra & Performance Groups
Every Friday morning, orchestra, marimba and/or ukulele groups are in full swing. Led by our music lead teacher, Mrs Kumar, these groups are open to all students in Years 3–6. Our School Orchestra is the perfect place for kids already learning an instrument to experience playing together in a big group. At the same time, our Marimba and Ukulele Clubs offer a great, hands-on way to get into music.
🎵 School Choir
Our School Choir meets every Tuesday and is open to all students in Years 3–6. The kids have been working hard practicing a great mix of modern hits and cultural songs. It’s a wonderful, relaxed group for anyone who loves to sing, and it is a great way for them to build performance confidence together.
🎭 Drama Club
Drama Club runs on Mondays at lunchtime and is open to our Year 3–6 students. It’s a great, high-energy space where the kids get to play around with storytelling, improvisation, and acting out characters. It is an awesome way for them to express themselves, have fun, and build up their confidence with public speaking.
📚 Year 6 Leadership: Library Helpers & Office Monitors
Our Year 6 students are doing a fantastic job stepping into big leadership roles across the school. We have Library Helpers and Office Monitors who give up their breaks to help keep things running smoothly. Whether they are issuing books, tidying the library space, or helping out with admin tasks at the front desk, they are showing awesome responsibility and serving as great role models for the younger kids.
🏆 School Sports
Alongside all our lunchtime clubs, we have a massive range of school sports offered throughout the year. It has been great seeing so many of our students proudly wearing the Kaikorai school top and giving it their all at weekly games. A big thank you to all the parents, caregivers, and staff who are out there every week coaching, managing teams, and driving the kids to games!
None of these opportunities would be possible without the dedication of our staff. A big thank you to all the teachers and teacher aides who give up their time, breaks, and energy to share their own passions and strengths with our kids. We are so lucky to have such a committed staff!
