Statement from the Kaikorai Primary School Board

Kia ora koutou,

You may be aware that the government has recently removed the requirement for school boards to give effect to the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. At Kaikorai Primary School, we want to reassure our community that this change does not alter our stance. Honouring Te Tiriti is central to our mission and values, and we will continue to uphold this commitment.

Our mission is to provide an environment in which children continue to develop a love of learning and respect for others. This aligns naturally with the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi—partnership, participation, and protection—because they guide us to create a school where every child feels valued and connected.

Our values reflect this commitment:

  • Kind – Atawhai: We respect and celebrate the unique identities, languages, and cultures of all learners.

  • Aspiring – Wawata: We strive for equity and excellence, ensuring Māori perspectives are woven into learning.

  • Independent – Mana Motuhake: We empower tamariki to think critically and embrace diversity.

  • Keen – Hīkaka: We actively seek opportunities to deepen our understanding of te ao Māori and strengthen partnerships with whānau.

For us, Te Tiriti is not a compliance requirement—it is a foundation for fairness, inclusion, and cultural responsiveness. It shapes our decisions and our vision for Kaikorai as a place where all tamariki thrive.

We will continue to:

  • Embed te reo Māori and tikanga in our daily practices.

  • Engage with whānau Māori in authentic partnership.

  • Provide learning that reflects Aotearoa’s bicultural heritage.

Thank you for supporting us in this kaupapa. Together, we ensure Kaikorai remains a school where every child feels respected, inspired, and proud of who they are.

Ngā mihi nui,

Kaikorai Primary School Board.
