PBL - Space Challenges

In week 3, all classes in the Tūī Hapori spent the afternoons taking part in different challenges. During the week they had the opportunity to make a straw rocket, create a short space related skit that included some music, and finally make a paper cup rocket.

Students were encouraged to practice our KAIK Values: Whether they were working alone or in a team, we wanted to see them showing our values:

👑 K - Kind: Be supportive, encouraging, and helpful to those working near or alongside you.

🌟 A - Aspiring: Aim high, challenge yourself, and show pride in your learning.

🧠 I - Independence: Stay on task, organise your own materials, and make choices that help you succeed.

🔭 K - Keen: Bring enthusiasm, curiosity, and a positive attitude to every single activity!

Some tasks were independent and others were collaborative. When working in groups, we were looking for everybody to practise great teamwork. That meant listening to each other's ideas, sharing the jobs, and working together to solve problems.

With the collaborative groups, we also encouraged students to be working with people from different classes. This was a great way to learn from their peers and make our syndicate strong!

Bruce Potter

We were lucky enough to have author and illustrator Bruce Potter come and talk to our syndicate. He shared some of the books that he had worked on throughout his career. Students listened carefully to what he had to say, and enjoyed watching him create some funny illustrations using their ideas as inspiration. It was great to see students engaged and keen to find books written or illustrated by Bruce in our school library, and trying out some of his drawing techniques back in the classroom.

Bob Bickerton - Taonga Pūoro

The performance featured different taonga pūoro (traditional Māori instruments) including pākuru, kōhatu, tumutumu, pūrerehua, porotiti, hue puruhau, poi awhiowhio, kōauau ponga ihu, pūtōrino, kōauau, pōrutu, ororuarangi, nguru, pūtatara, pūpū harakeke, karanga ruru, karanga weka, karanga manu and pūkāea.

As well as demonstrating the instruments, Bob told a number of pūrākau (old stories) that gave background stories to the taonga.

These stories included a creation story, the separation of Ranginui and Papatūānuku, the story of a whale stranding and a tooth from one of those whales, and the story of the pūpū harakeke and Tāne's task of cloaking Papatūānuku in the ngahere (bush).

Staff Support Week

We would like to say a huge thank you to all of the support staff who help make our school so great.

  • Mrs Galbraith, Miss Mackay, AK, and Kat all help out in our classes to support our learning programmes.

  • Sharon and Sam in the office are always working away, answering questions and helping with injuries.

  • We also appreciate Mr Glennie helping us keep our school grounds looking great.

Kids Sing

We are so proud of how hard our students worked to learn songs for the Kids Sing performance. They worked together well and helped to make the annual Kids Sing show a huge success. While there were a few nerves prior to the rehearsal and evening performance, it was great to see them once again demonstrating the KAIK values and giving it their best. It was also a highlight to see some taonga pūoro used at the show following on from our learning with Bob Bickerton.

Thank you to Mrs Kumar for all of her hard work in getting us involved and ready to perform in Kids Sing.
