Emergency Procedure Focus: Fire Evacuation Drill and Upcoming Lockdown Practice
This week and next, our school is focusing on reviewing and practicing our emergency procedures to ensure the safety and well-being of all students and staff.
This week, we successfully conducted a trial fire evacuation. Next week, we will be practicing our lockdown procedure. This important exercise will help everyone understand what to do in a lockdown situation.
As part of our emergency preparedness, it is crucial that we have accurate and up-to-date contact information for all whānau readily available in the school office.
Action Required: Update Your Contact Details
If you have moved house, changed phone numbers, or updated your email address since your child started at Kaikorai School, please inform us immediately. You can update your details by visiting Sharon or Sam in the office, or by emailing us at secretary@kaikorai.school.nz. Ensuring this information is current is vital for us to be able to contact you quickly and efficiently in an emergency.
Attendance - Every day Matters ✅
We received our termly detailed attendance data for Term 1. In April 2024, the Government announced a regular attendance target of 80% of students to be present for more
than 90% of the term by 2030. 82% of our students regularly attended school this term - this is compared to 75% in Term 1, 2024. 34% of absences are due to holidays in term time. A reminder please that you must inform me of any extended absences from school. Please email principal@kaikorai.school.nz .
Please remember that if your child is going to be absent from school, you must notify the office each day. Please call or email to explain the reason for their absence. While we appreciate you also letting your child's classroom teacher know, the first and most important step is to inform the office. This ensures accurate attendance records and allows us to follow up if needed.
Whānau Hui for Māori whānau 🗣️
Could our whānau Māori please respond to the survey regarding our upcoming whānau hui?
Road Safety 🦺
This week, we celebrated our amazing road safety heroes who ensure our Kaik Kids get to and from school safely daily! Thank you for also being a vital part of this effort. You can further support our tamariki by:
Keeping the yellow lines clear when parking.
Respecting our neighbours' driveways, especially the flat on Stuart Street.
Choosing safe parking spots instead of tooting for your child to cross.
Just a friendly reminder that the area directly outside the school on Wright Street is designated as a 'kiss and drop' zone. This means it's a quick stop for drop-offs in the morning and pick-ups in the afternoon – perfect for keeping traffic flowing smoothly when everyone uses it this way. For taking your child into class or waiting at 3 p.m., please use the designated parking areas. When we all work together, the 'kiss and drop' system works beautifully for our tamariki's safety. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation!
Farewell to Miss Dunn 😢
Today, we say farewell to Courtney after her dedicated service of 18 years. We appreciate all that Courtney has contributed to our school community during this time and wish her the very best as she moves on to her next adventure. Safe travels, and we will miss you Miss Dunn!
Support staff day ✨
Yesterday was a special day as we took time to recognise and celebrate the incredible contributions of our fantastic support staff! This included our caretaker, Mr Glennie, and the friendly faces who keep our office running smoothly, Sam and Sharon.
We are truly grateful for each and every member of our support team. They make such a positive difference, both in our classrooms and all around our kura. Our team consistently goes the extra mile with their excellent communication, their positive attitudes, and their genuine care for all our tamariki.
We are so lucky to have such a dedicated and supportive crew! Thank you for everything you do - we value you so very much.
Staffing news ✏️
In Week 5, I will be joining the principals from our Hills Cluster on a trip to Brisbane. We are excited to work alongside Sean Gordon, whom you may remember from our teacher-only day in January. Our time in Brisbane will involve visiting schools that share the Hills Cluster's vision for Project-Based Learning (PBL) in the classroom. It's a fantastic opportunity to learn and bring new ideas back to our kura.
Additionally, the Kaikorai School Board has granted me travel leave. I will be away from school from June 9th, 2025, to July 18th, 2025.
During my absence, Kristen Ferguson will step into the role of Acting Principal. Please don't hesitate to reach out to Kristen directly if you have any questions or require any assistance during this time.
