E ngaki ana a mua, e tōtō mai ana a muri.

This whakatauki speaks to the importance of preparing the ground (or oneself) before embarking on a task. It implies a period of clearing, perhaps a mental or physical "reset," before moving forward, which can be seen as refreshing or preparing oneself for what's next.

Teacher/Whanāu Conferences

Thank you so much for attending our recent Teacher/Whānau conferences. Your presence is incredibly valued, and we truly appreciate your effort.

These conferences are so important for building strong relationships between home and school. When we work together, we create the best possible learning environment for your children. Your continued support in their education is invaluable and plays a huge role in their success.

If you have any further questions or wish to discuss anything else, please don't hesitate to message your child's classroom teacher directly.

Student Leadership

We are working to grow student leadership across the school. Students help with PALS, wet day duties, coaching, office duties, librarians, and road patrol. Some of our school leaders are preparing to shine as leads in our school production.

This term, our PALS have been busy running games across the school. They have been excellent leaders who are significantly impacting our school community.

We started a wet day programme for the Pīwakawa team. Senior leaders are rostered to help out at break times on wet days. They set up and run activities, ensuring that the school's youngest members have an enjoyable break time. Our wet day team also ensures that the learning street is tidy at the end of breaks so that teachers can get started with their afternoon programmes.

A team of senior leaders are also coaching a sports team this year. They are currently coaching netball and basketball, sharing their knowledge of these games with some of our youngest students.

A huge thank you to all of the Kererū team students who have volunteered their time to help others this term.

Celebrating Matariki

We recently had a special Matariki celebration at our school, where our students came together in their whānau groups to learn about and honour this significant time in the Māori calendar.

Our tamariki immersed themselves in the spirit of Matariki, listening to stories of the stars, singing waiata, and participating in traditional games, creative arts, and crafts. Working in whānau groups fostered a sense of togetherness and cooperation, enriching their learning experience.

What is Matariki? Matariki is the Māori name for the cluster of stars also known as the Pleiades. Its reappearance in the night sky during mid-winter signals the Māori New Year. It's a time for us to reflect on the past year, celebrate the present, and plan for the year ahead.

Why is it important to celebrate Matariki? Celebrating Matariki provides a valuable opportunity for all our students to connect with Māori culture, history, and traditions. It helps them understand our unique place in Aotearoa New Zealand, fostering a sense of identity and belonging. It's a time for remembrance, for giving thanks for what we have, and for setting aspirations for the future. We were so proud to see our students embrace the learning and spirit of Matariki, and we look forward to continuing to celebrate this important time together each year.
