Bruce Potter Visit
Bruce Potter has illustrated more than 140 books, working with well-known authors such as Margaret Mahy, Deeno Yipadee, and Craig Smith. We were fortunate to get a sneak peek at the concept drawings for the brand-new Nee Naw book, set to be released early next year.
He then led us through an engaging drawing lesson, showing us that drawings don’t need to be perfect to be effective. We learned how using light and dark can bring a picture to life, how to begin shading softly and gradually build depth, and how every drawing starts with simple shapes.
Bruce also invited ideas from the children, asking for suggestions for the eyes, nose, mouth, and ears, and we watched as the illustration came together step by step.
The main messages he shared were to keep doodling and never stop, to let your imagination take you anywhere, to remember that a picture can tell a thousand words, and to always draw what you see rather than what you think you know.
