Week 5 Principal's News

Arrival time to school ⏰

A quick reminder that our school gates and doors open at 8:30 am.

Please ensure children do not arrive before this time, as we are unable to provide supervision. Our teachers use this valuable time to prepare for the day ahead.

If we notice a pattern of students arriving consistently early, we will reach out to discuss adjusting your morning routine. Thank you for your support.

Snow days and late starts ❄️

As colder weather arrives, here is a quick guide to how we handle school closures or late starts due to snow.

How Decisions Are Made

The Otago Primary Principals Association (OPPA) representatives coordinate any decisions regarding weather-related delays or cancellations. As soon as we receive this information, we will pass it on to you immediately.

Stay Informed

We will notify you of any changes via:

  • Seesaw: Direct message to all families.

  • Email: A newsletter sent to the address we have on file.

  • Facebook: A post on our official page (make sure you follow us!).

  • Radio: Listen to local stations or check their social media for regional updates.

Safety First

If school is open but you feel it is unsafe to travel from your area, please keep your children home and notify the office of their absence.

Winter Sports 🏀

The hockey, basketball, and netball seasons are officially underway! It’s wonderful to see so many KAIK Kids out there representing our kura.

A big thank you to the whānau coaching and supporting our teams, especially those helping our students who are trying a new sport for the very first time. Your positive energy and encouraging cheers from the sidelines make all the difference.

Reporting to Parents

In last week’s newsletter, I mentioned that we are updating our mid-year reports. This week, I want to focus on the Progress Descriptors and what they mean.

One significant change is the introduction of new, standardised terminology now being used across all New Zealand school reports. These descriptors are designed to provide a clearer picture of how your child is progressing relative to the expected curriculum expectations.

To learn more about the specific language you will see in your child’s report, please [click here to read the full article].

All classroom teachers will receive an additional release day in the coming weeks to help with the report-writing workload during this time.

Kids Sing Performance 🎶

Last night, the Tūi and Kererū hapori performed at the Town Hall as part of the Kids Sing performance. Our students represented Kaikorai School so well, singing beautifully and showing great enthusiasm throughout the evening. It was a wonderful opportunity to perform in such a special venue alongside other Dunedin schools.

A huge thank you to Mrs Kumar for all the time and effort she put into preparing the students for this event. We are so proud of all of our performers!
