May Principal's news

By Beth Downie | Posted: Tuesday May 3, 2022

The senior leadership team spent a day off-site this week working on our school vision, leadership and direction. We have 'work-ons' like any organisation but we identified so many areas of strengths in our school.

These are the aspects that we thought were strengths and I'm sure we have missed many: Quality teachers and teaching, a positive vibe, welcoming staff, our students come first, active learning programmes, a balanced programme, strong school values, communication, staff and student wellbeing is a focus. I hope you would agree with us but would welcome any kōrero about your child and our school at any time.

Whānau morning

By now, you would have received an invite from your child to our whānau morning this Thursday. We hope you can come along and see the fantastic project-based learning that has been happening across Kaikorai School. The projects you will see are answering our Term 1 driving question of "How can we showcase our school when parents are not allowed on-site". Classes will be open from 8:45 am through to 10:30. I am looking forward to seeing you all. Nau mai haere mai.

Property news

The building project is moving swiftly along. The demolition of the old middle block, kitchen and shed is scheduled for next week. In preparation for demolition, the hall and old junior block will be decanted in the coming weeks.

Did you know that our new administration block is being built along Tyne Street? This will house our new offices, library, staff room and storage areas. The expected date for completion is March 2023.

Enrolling at Kaikorai School

Do you know of any 5-year-olds in our school zone who have not yet enrolled at Kaikorai? Please get in touch so I can show them around our school and highlight the fabulous spaces and teaching that we have happening in our early year classes.

Structured literacy

You may have heard about structured literacy in the news or even noticed the way your child is being to taught to read seems different to the way some of your other children were taught? The reading books might even look different. We are planning a parents' evening to discuss the changes in reading, phonics and structured literacy. We will let you know when we have the date confirmed.

Stay in touch

I see many of you at the gate before and after school. Please don't hesitate to ask me any questions, arrange a catch-up or ask for help with any aspect of your child's school life. This is what we are here for - no question is silly or problem too small.

Stay warm out there!
