Where I am From Poetry

Where I’m From

By Eleanor Geddes

I am from bunk beds,

From teacups and fairy lights lining and lighting playhouse walls. Beautifully cut wooden walls by loving grandparents

I am from Jewellery. Necklaces hanging from mirrors, earrings and bracelets below.

Noisy, Bookworm.

Strong odour of baby pink coloured roses fills my bedroom.

I am from magnolia and a tall elderflower tree, flying, waving, dancing in the soft wind.

I am from Passover, Easter, Christmas and Jesus. Learning to love and follow the God who is my light.

I am from lockets of silver shaped like hearts, younger sisters happily bouncing and laughing on our trampoline,

Treat-giving Grandma’s willing to oblige.

From cousins always asking for playdates and my brother who absolutely loves lollies.

I am from the happy family that fills my life with love and joy, going out to get sushi and slushies.

I am from naughty tales from when Grandpa was a 7-year-old kid, playing board or card games every night.

I am from meals of flatbread, parsley and horseradish and remembering Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection.

I am from Dunedin, Roslyn. Gypsies and kilts.

From the delicious crunchy chicken that my dad has a tendency to cook and mince pies.

I am from my cheeky grandfather who played in car boxes, the tales of me being a flower girl walking up the aisle and throwing rose petals into the air. That dress still is at my house, although it now belongs to one of my younger sisters. A green band around my waist. A white flower attached to the sash.

This is my family, and this is my history.

Where I’m From

By Makanaka

I am from pots and pans banging early in the morning,

from combs and hair spray.

I am from a crowd of plushies waiting to hug me,

Messy, Loud

Cold.

I am from a jungle of plants dancing in the sunshine.

I am from long road trips and pictures of me and my family.

From my Pretty mom and my super tall brother.

I am from the smell of Scrumptious food cooking in the kitchen and being a bit cheeky with my brother!

from “You'll reap what you sow” and “ Do to others as you would have done to you”.

I’m from Memory verse competitions and bible stories before bed.

I am from Taupo and stories of zimbabwe.

Sadza, Ceravita, foods from Zimbabwe.

from the water fights splashing my mom in the pool.

My brother who wants to design houses.

My cute, cuddly pink teddy, who was mine before I was born.

I am from these moments.

Car trips and splashing around in the pool.

This is my history.

Where I am From?

By Cooper Bradley

I am from a black wish and supermarket stops,

from chats with Mum and Brother.

I am from a home with a heart,

from my cosy bed, embracing me & whispering go to sleep.

I am from the smelling flower next to the seat,

beaconing me to smell its beautiful smell,

I am from an everyday run,

and shoes burning rubber,

I am from Jordan and Riley.

I am from don’t be sad cause sad backwards is das and das nice.

I am from mighty Maori warriors with mana,

and standing tall like the mighty Totara rangatiratanga.

I'm from Dunedin and New Zealand,

from fish, chicken and chips

I am from these moments,

I am Cooper,

I am Maori.

Where I’m From

By Olivia

I am from plastic toy food through my room from portraits and hundreds of beautiful books.

I am from a jungle outside in my garden, dark and leaves crunching beneath my feet.

I am from purple Hydrangeas, dancing in the warm breeze.

I am from Chinese New Year and Chinese Knots, from my little sister and Mum.

I am from the games on Friday and drawing on Weekends, from “Education is important” and “We eat mooncakes on Lunar New year.

I am from Spring festival and Christmas.

I am from Xian and New Zealand, dumplings and cherries. From the funny, cheeky and annoying little sister and the black hair and smart mum. Special photos on mum's phone, funny and cool.

I am from those moments this is my family and my history.

Basketball Otago

We would like to thank Basketball Otago and Tim Gillan for the time spent with our senior classes, running skills-based sessions. The students loved having the chance to learn from an experienced coach and had a great time. We are grateful for the insights you provided and the enthusiasm you brought to the sessions. Your support is invaluable, and we look forward to working with you again in the future.

PBL

Students in our senior team are learning about their identity and celebrating who they are and where they come from. Thank you to the parents who have shared their stories with us. We will explore how to tell our stories in the next few weeks. Please send along to school any photos, stories etc., that your child could use for the presentation. Please do not send anything of great value. Photocopies of important images etc., would be best.

PALS

Our physical activity leaders have started running lunchtime games; students are encouraged to tap into their creative sides and get active. Due to many applications, those who applied are having lunchtime trials to see if the programme is right for them. We will confirm the PALS for 2023 as soon as possible.

Kaikorai Valley College Sports Day

On sports day, students had the opportunity to participate in various activities, including judo, indoor bowls, Jump Jam, netball, handball and football. This was an excellent chance for students to come together and have fun while learning about themselves and their culture. It was a fantastic way to promote self-confidence and a sense of community and belonging.

Long Beach Visits-This form should now be completed. We are unable to take any students who do not have permission to attend.

From the 21st-24th of March, the senior team classes will head to Long Beach for a day of rock climbing with Tim and the team from Dunedin Climbing. This visit aims to develop self-confidence, be presented with a challenging opportunity, and try something new - all coming under the KAIK value of being keen.

Each class will attend on a different day.

-Room 12-Wednesday the 22nd March
