It is WELLBEING WEEK at Kaikorai next week!

By Kristen Ferguson | Posted: Tuesday May 9, 2023

From Monday 15 May - Friday 19 May, the tamariki at Kaikorai will be diving into activities that promote their wellbeing.

Every day you will see Senior "Morning Greeters" standing beside Ms Downie and the teachers on Tyne St, greeting their peers with a smile to start their day in a positive light. Ms Downie will also be popping into classes to read stories about feelings/wellbeing. Mrs Ferguson will continue her weekly Wellbeing sessions in classrooms.

Monday Connect, me whakawhanaunga - Talk and listen – me kōrero, me whakarongo, be there – me whakawātea i a koe, feel connected – me rongo i te whanaungatanga.

Students will be encouraged to give groups/clubs that Kaikorai offers a try and connect with their peers in a different way. Syndicates may get together and connect as a group by singing songs or through team building games.

TuesdayBe active, me kori tonu - Do what you can – whāia te mea ka taea e koe, enjoy what you do – kia pārekareka tāu i whai ai, move your mood – kia pai ake ō piropiro

Our PALS group will be taking classes for some active fun and games throughout the day, and movement breaks will be prominent in the classrooms. Ākonga are encouraged to ride their bikes or scooters, or walk to school if the weather allows!

Wednesday - Take notice, me aro tonu - Remember the simple things that give you joy – me aro tonu ki ngā mea māmā noa i ngākau harikoa ai koe.

This will be a day of mindfulness. The tamariki will practice breathing techniques, peaceful activities like colouring or listening to music, and noticing the little things around them that give them joy. We also have a special guest to do some yoga with the Senior Syndicate.

Thursday - Keep learning, me ako tonu - Embrace new experiences – awhitia te wheako hou, see opportunities – kimihia ngā ara hou, surprise yourself – me ohorere koe i a koe anō.

Learning new things creates new pathways in the brain. Students will be engrossed in activities that will use their brains in ways they may not have used before. Perhaps they will learn a few words in a new language, or try out a challenging jigsaw puzzle.

Friday - Give, tukua - Give your time, your words, your presence; tukua te wā ki a koe, ō kupu, ko koe tonu.

Friday is also PINK SHIRT DAY!!! (Please see the Pink Shirt Day newsletter article for more information.)

Ākonga will be encouraged to think about others on this day. They will be thinking of others, doing things for others and making things for others. The topic of bullying will also be a large topic of conversation and will be the theme of our school assembly.

If you have knowledge or skills in any of these areas that you'd like to share in your child's classroom or syndicate, please let Mrs Ferguson know! :) [email protected]
