Tūngia te ururua kia tupu whakaritorito te tupu o te harakeke. Clear away the undergrowth so the new shoots of the harakeke can spring up.
Here comes the bride!
Congratulations, Miss Matravers!
During the recent school holidays, Miss Matravers got married. We are all very happy for her and pleased that she had the most wonderful wedding. Miss Matravers is now, Mrs Cockroft.
Welcome, Miss Hall!
Miss Hall will be collaboratively teaching in Room 10 for the next few weeks. Miss Hall is a student from the Otago College of Education.
SHARED MORNING TEA-Well Being Week
On Monday, all of the classes in our team will have a shared morning tea to connect for Well-Being Week. Please send along a small plate of food to share.
PBL
This term, we will look beyond our small, blue planet and learn about space, planets and stars to further understand and appreciate the innovative ways we use, view and celebrate astronomical systems past and present.
To begin the project, students will explore the planets, the sun, Matariki, our solar system and space exploration before understanding what innovation is. Throughout the project, teachers will gauge what interests their class to then delve deeper into space innovation, e.g. robotics, space travel, and living on another planet.
We will finish with a school exhibition to share our scientific learning with our school whānau and community as part of our Matariki celebration.
Night ‘n’ Day Otago Nuggets
Our senior school students recently had a fantastic experience with the Otago Nuggets Todd Withers and Darcy Knox. They coached the students in basketball and signed autographs while also sharing their stories and advice. The students asked insightful questions and were inspired by Todd's reasoning as to why he has a zero on his team singlet. He believes there should be zero excuses for achieving your goals. It was an enjoyable visit for all, and we thank Todd and Darcy for giving up their time and for bringing Cookie time cookies to share.
Read on for your opportunity to access free tickets to the Nuggets game on the 13th of May when you take your child to watch the game.

League
League sessions with Troy Anstiss from the Southern Zone of the NZRL have been enjoyed over the past two weeks. Our students took part in passing and receiving drills and played some modified rugby league games.
The Otago Rugby League Development Day is taking place next Sunday, 21st May, at the Sargood Centre/Logan Park (40 Logan Park Drive). The development day will start with a morning session for year 5, 6, 7 & 8 primary/intermediate school-aged students. This will go from 9:30 am-12:00 pm (sign in from 9 am) and will include skills, drills, games, wellbeing session and NRL pathways. A reminder that all players will need to bring their own boots, mouthguard, snacks and water bottles, and the day is free of charge. To register for the ORL Development day (same link for morning and afternoon): https://www.sporty.co.nz/viewform/234293
NZ Sign Language
This week our teacher’s aide Renae taught some of our Senior Students sign language as part of NZSL week. Learning is important because NZSL is a beautiful, living and evolving language. NZSL enables the Deaf community to thrive and break down barriers. NZSL is for everyone. Check out some of the photos of Room 12 taking part. Thank you, Renae, for sharing your knowledge with us!
Zones
Mrs Fergusson has been visiting our senior classes to teach us about bullying and diversity. These sessions have been extremely valuable and have helped us to learn about each other and what makes us unique and special. Students have learned what bullying is and what to do if it happens to them. We talk to our students frequently about what it means to be kind and a good friend. At Kaikorai, we have keen and caring kids!

A big thank you to our student road patrol team! You make it safe for our students to cross the street at the end of the day.
Otago Museum Trips
Please keep a look out on Seesaw for the permission slip to attend our class visits to the Otago Museum in June. These will be sent out at the end of the month.
During these class visits, our students will be exploring how we can use innovation to explore space and Mātariki. Students will learn about the planets, stars and other astronomical systems through our visit to the planetarium and galleries.
The cost for this trip will be $10 and will be added to your child's school account. We will travel by bus and need caregiver volunteers to help us. If you can volunteer, please complete the section regarding volunteers on the Google Form. We can only accept a maximum of three volunteers for each class for this visit, so please sign up quickly.
