O Mathalon-Seb, Betty, Toby and Genevieve named top Year 5 Mathematicians in Otago!

On Thursday, August 22nd, 16 Year 5 and 6 students participated in the OMAthlon, an exciting and fast-paced team maths competition.

The day's highlight was the Year 5 competition, where our teams performed brilliantly, appearing on the scoreboard from the start. As the final moments approached, the Year 5 teams anxiously awaited the results and were thrilled to discover that one of our teams secured 1st place and the other 4th place. Congratulations to Seb, Betty, Toby, and Genevieve for their outstanding achievement in winning the competition!

Earlier in the day, our Year 6 teams kicked off the event, tackling challenging problems and racing against the clock. After 30 intense minutes of hard work, our teams proudly achieved a 7th-place finish and 30th place out of 44 teams—an impressive effort!

Thank you to Mark Pickering and the parents who supported our teams and provided transportation to the event. Your help made this experience possible for our students.

Jump Jam

Four teams recently represented our school at the Strictly Jump Jam competition held at Kaikorai Valley. Two of our teams competed in the freshman category, while the other two teams took on the advanced competition.

All four teams performed exceptionally well, earning top places in their respective categories:

  • Little Party – 1st overall

  • Uptown Funk – 3rd overall

  • Stop, Drop, and Roll – 3rd in the Year 5 and 6 Freshman category

  • I Got A Feeling – 2nd in the Year 4 Freshman category

We are also thrilled to announce that Kaikorai was honoured with the Sportsmanship Award for our students’ outstanding support and encouragement of others throughout the event.

Congratulations especially to Little Party, which was invited to compete at the national competition in Christchurch in November.

We are incredibly proud of all the students involved who demonstrated our school’s KAIK values throughout the process and committed many break times to train for this event.

Thank you to Miss Sims, Miss Youngs, Miss McLean and Miss Horton for coaching the teams!

Cross Over Basketball Taieri vs Town Tournament

Some students in the Kererū Team attended the  Cross Over Basketball Taieri vs Town tournament! The day was filled with incredible games, with several matchups decided by less than five points. Kaikorai placed 5th in this competition. Levi was a top scorer in the competition, averaging 16 points per game and was recognised as a tournament all-star for his exceptional teamwork and talent.

Polyfest

Polyfest is an opportunity for children and whanau to participate in Māori and Pacific cultural experiences that broaden and celebrate individual and collective cultural identities.

This year, our Year 3—Year 6 students will perform at Polyfest on Friday, September 13th, at 12:48 p.m. If your child is a member of this year's Kapa Haka Group, please complete the attached Google Form.

An Olympic Story by Harry W

The Battle for the Olympic Flame

Our story starts on an early Thursday morning as ‘Handsome’ Harry, as they called him, rose from his bed. He strolled downstairs in his dressing gown and made himself a cup of coffee. Then he walked back upstairs to get dressed.

Five minutes later, he casually strolled downstairs and slipped on his black Vans. Then he slipped out the door and set off on his bike to the Olympic stadium. As Handsome rode up to the Olympic stadium, he noticed that Stubby Sam and Delightful David were standing suspiciously near the locked door of the barbed wire fence that separated their house from the stadium; it seemed a little fishy. Handsome remembered how he and Stubby used to be in a rowing pair. Everything was going well until Stubby got his hands and legs burnt off in an Olympic flame-lighting accident.

All of this immediately cleared Handsome's mind as he parked his bike and used a secret key in his pocket to open a secret door in the corner of the building and walked up some stone steps to his seat. He sat down and ordered some bacon, eggs, and toast. This was great.

After his food came, the fencers stepped up to face each other. While they were fencing, Handsome noticed that Delightful David was ramming his massive body into the barbed wire door. Handsome was just about to report it when sleeping darts rained from the sky, taking out security guards one by one. The crowd was suddenly in a panic and sprinted for the exits. Suddenly, Delightful rammed through the door and jumped on a nearby horse, followed by Stubby. The fencers tried to run away, but were shot with sleeping darts. Delightful grabbed their sabre swords and passed one to Stubby. Handsome decided to put a stop to this, so he jumped over the fence and sprinted over to Stubby. Stubby was momentarily distracted, so Stubby shoved him off the horse, “HEY!”  shouted Stubby as Handsome rode away; Handsome rode right over to where the Olympic flame was sitting. He jumped off his horse and sprinted over to the Olympic flame, but Delightful was too fast. He threw his sword in front of Handsome, causing him to trip over and faceplant into the ground. Delightful tried to grab the flame but Handsome spun around and tripped him up, grabbing the flame while he was at it.

“Ha Ha, you will never catch me!” he yelled as he sprinted over to the exit.

Five strong security guards rammed through the door of the stadium and came out rolling Delightful and Stubby on a table with straps to hold them down. They were wheeled into an armoured truck and driven away at speed.

The next day, Handsome was presented with a medal for his bravery in protecting the Olympic flame from being blown out. The medal was presented to him by King Charles |||, himself. Handsome was a hero for the rest of his days!
