New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) Week!

This week has been a special one at our school as we celebrated New Zealand Sign Language Week. It's been a fantastic opportunity for our tamariki to learn more about one of New Zealand's official languages and its importance in our diverse community.

We are thrilled to share that Mrs Barnes, one of our wonderful Teacher Aides, is actively training to become fluent in New Zealand Sign Language. Her dedication and passion for inclusivity and communication have inspired us all.

Today, Mrs Barnes visited classes across the school to give our students an engaging lesson on sign language. The enthusiasm and curiosity from our students were truly heartwarming. They eagerly learned basic signs, explored the expressive nature of sign language, and gained a deeper appreciation for diversity and inclusion.

Mrs Barnes and Mrs Faulkner have also joined forces to start a New Zealand Sign Language Club, which will meet every Thursday at lunchtime. This club is open to all students who are interested in learning more about NZSL, practicing their signing skills, and embracing diversity in our school community.

We believe that fostering an understanding of different languages and communication methods is vital in creating an inclusive and supportive environment for all our students.
