Kei ōu ringaringa The world is yours! All you have to do is dream and persevere.
End of Term 1
Our students have had many wonderful learning experiences this term, including our multicultural PBL topic activities, Kaikorai Valley College sports day, Move it March, fire safety, draw exploratorium, visits from experts in different areas of learning, Kapa Haka, ukulele, choir, drama, a new fitness programme, and much more.
We thank all the families who contributed to our PBL this term. Whether you shared your cultural heritage with your child's class or provided insights into your family's traditions and values, your efforts have enriched our understanding of diverse cultures.
In the upcoming term, our students will embark on an exhilarating scientific journey as part of our PBL. The driving question will be: How can we explore the wonders of our physical world? We will unravel the mysteries of motion, matter, energy, and forces.
We aim to captivate students with hands-on experiments and interactive learning opportunities. Exploring topics such as forces and motion and the properties of matter, our young scientists will delve into engaging activities designed to spark curiosity, fuel their passion for discovery, and foster critical thinking skills. We encourage anyone with expertise in this field to join us and share their knowledge. Please reach out if you or someone you know is interested in contributing to our exploration of science.
The Kererū team would like to wish everyone a safe and enjoyable break during the school holidays! We eagerly anticipate welcoming everyone back with renewed energy and enthusiasm next term.
Year 6 Fundraising for Camp
On Tuesday, November 26th, our Year 6 students will embark on an exciting adventure to Camp Columba. To help reduce the cost of camp for our students, we're seeking enthusiastic parent volunteers to run a weekly sausage sizzle.
Responsibilities include:
Setting up the barbecue
Cooking sausages
Assisting the Year 6 helpers who help out at the sausage sizzle each week.
Your support will make a significant difference in making this camp experience accessible to all students.
If you can spare some time and energy to help out, please email [email protected].
Thank you for your ongoing support!
Draw Exploratorium
Over the last two weeks, Jen from the Dunedin Public Art Gallery has visited our classes to teach various art skills. Students tuned in to their surroundings and explored objects in detail. They also built their observational skills, used their imagination, and shared their creations with others.
EPro 8
All classes participated in the Epro8 internal event, and the winning team will compete in the regional event next week. Congratulations to Sylvie, Htin Bhone, Pippa Thomas and Ella Jones for winning the internal event and placing 5th in the Otago competition.
PBL Showcase
In a vibrant showcase of cultural richness, Kaikorai Primary recently hosted a spectacular Multicultural Festival, celebrating the diverse tapestry of our community. The event, organised as part of a Project-Based Learning (PBL), aimed to immerse students in a multicultural experience, fostering understanding, respect, and appreciation for the plethora of cultures that exist within the school
The festival, which took place on Tuesday, April 9th, was a resounding success. Students enthusiastically shared their learning and experiences with peers, teachers, and visitors. The event offered a glimpse into the myriad of cultures represented within the school community.
One of the festival's highlights was the captivating performance by the Kapahaka group. The ukulele ensemble and choir also delivered a joint musical performance that further added to the festive atmosphere.
Roslyn Fire Service Visit
This week, the Roslyn Fire crew visited us, bringing along not just one but two impressive fire trucks! Students were treated to an interactive and educational experience as they learned all about these mighty fire appliances. They even had the thrilling opportunity to get hands-on with a high-pressure fire hose.
Students gathered around to explore the fire trucks, discovering the array of specialised equipment used by firefighters.
But the real thrill came when students were invited to step up and take hold of the powerful fire hose. With guidance from experienced firefighters, students experienced the rush of controlling the high-pressure stream of water, gaining a newfound appreciation for the skill and precision required in firefighting operations.
The Roslyn Fire crew's visit provided an exciting hands-on learning experience and a valuable opportunity for students to engage with and learn from local firefighters.
Autism Awareness Month
On Wednesday, we participated in a NATIONAL Autism Hour from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., during which we turned off the lights and created a calm and quiet learning space. Mrs Ferguson spoke with the senior classes about Autism to help us understand each other better. Students and teachers wore hoodies to accompany the “Hoods Up, Volume Down” message.
Some things to think about…
Imagine everyone's brain is like a unique puzzle that helps them understand the world. Well, kids with autism have a different kind of puzzle. It's not better or worse, just different.
Just like a computer has its own operating system that makes it work differently from other computers, the brain of a person with autism works differently from the brain of a person without autism. This can cause difficulties in communication, social interaction, and other areas.
Multicultural Festival
The Multicultural Festival on Tuesday marked the culmination of our PBL experience. Your support, from your encouragement to your active involvement, was pivotal in making this event successful.
The festival celebrated diversity and featured performances from the Kapa Haka, the ukulele group, and the choir.
Following the performances, families and community members had the opportunity to explore our students' learning achievements throughout the term. Your support helped create an environment where students felt proud to showcase their progress and accomplishments.
