The Importance of Child Counselling

At Kaikorai, we work hard to create a supportive and caring environment where every child feels safe to express themselves. My door is always open for children to chat about their feelings, and we encourage open communication about emotions and mental health.

Our sensory room (Rūma Rangimarie) is a space frequently used to help students regulate their emotions and take a moment to refocus. We also offer wellbeing sessions and run the Seasons for Growth programme, which provides a safe space for children to explore their feelings and develop resilience.

While these school-based initiatives are essential, we recognise that some challenges require additional, professional support. When children are navigating big issues or experiencing strong emotions, seeking professional help can make a significant difference.

If you find that your child is struggling with big feelings, you notice a change in behaviour or they are dealing with trauma, it might be worth talking to a professional. Here are some options for you to explore in Dunedin:

You can also speak to your child’s GP, who can provide guidance and referrals to the right services.

If you’d like help navigating these options or discussing your child’s needs, please don’t hesitate to come and chat.

I have attached a good children's book to read to your child if you are wanting to talk to them about going to see someone. It's called TR and Mack: Little People, Big Feelings.
