Dunedin Orienteering School Series 2025
During Term 1 we hold a series of events on Sunday mornings that contribute towards the Schools Series competition between the local Primary, Intermediate and Secondary Schools.
These 3 events are targeted towards beginners and have a three-course grade format –
· Easy or white - has controls at every decision point to lead students around the course – recommended for primary and beginner students.
· Medium or “yellow” - has minor route choice decision-making options available – recommended to students with some experience and understanding of mapping details.
· Hard or orange - will enable students to make route choice decisions potentially off tracks – recommended to older high school students and those competent at orienteering.
We also open these up to the public, so there will be an adult/open version of the ‘hard/orange’ course for more experienced runners and club members. Any member of the public who is new to the sport and wants to give the easy or medium courses a go can do so after the students have run. All courses are divided into male and female categories.
This year’s events are currently being planned and should provide some excellent orienteering opportunities in a variety of terrain types. We now have confirmed locations for our three events as indicated in the pānuitanga/advert attached.
All school series events will have a short introductory session for beginner orienteers at 10am – this is really designed to help them understand the features they will be seeing on their maps, how to use the compass and other features to orient themselves. Starts will then be between 10:30-12noon.
Cost of entry is $5 per student / $10 per adult for the map. All competitors will require a SportIdent timing stick (dibber) and these can be hired for $2 each event.
