He waka eke noa - We are all in this together
This term we had the overarching question of “How can we design engaging and creative ways to showcase our community, its key places, people, and unique culture?”
This question opened up many avenues for our tamariki to explore our amazing community, meet some of its people, and visit some of its special places.
Both the Pīwakawaka and Tūī hapori visited some of Kaikorai’s oldest residents at Yvette Williams and Redroofs Retirement Village. They sang songs, made a craft, chatted with one another and asked questions to learn about the ‘good old days.’
Each Hapori visited the Community Gardens where they met Craig McGeady. Here tamariki explored the large space and the Middles and Seniors helped plant some greenery. The Pīwakawaka hapori enjoyed a picnic on Bishops Court.
We were all lucky enough to visit our local marae, Arai Te Uru, where Whea Ana welcomed us onto the grounds and Matua Kane replied on behalf of us as a kura. This was an amazing trip for all our syndicates, as we were able to embrace the Māori culture around our community and practice some of its traditions.
Throughout the term we have learnt that Kaikorai harbours many things within our community. The Linden Tree, Linden School, and how Kaikorai got its name from Māori explorer Rākaihautū.
Each class has showcased their learning through unique wall displays in our classrooms.
We really are so lucky to live in, and belong to, such an amazing community.
