Kaikorai Primary School has purchased the services of two Speech Language Therapists to come to the school and screen all 5 year old students.
The Ministry of Education has a very high threshold for receiving free services, one that we feel none of our students would make. However, this does not mean the issues that some of our students are presenting with are not insignificant. There is a clear link between accurate speech and literacy, especially in the area of spelling and writing.
ChatterVox Speech Language Therapy will be screening all children five years of age this year at Kaikorai Primary. The school will pay for this service for your children to ensure they have a good start with their communication needs at Kaikorai. Communication skills are important for social confidence and literacy. The screening is fun for your child and they can choose a sticker reward at the end of the screening. Children typically enjoy this process.
The Speech Therapists will be looking for the following:
Language delays - either with expressive language or with understanding.
Speech sounds that are either disordered or delayed.
Voice disorders (husky or incorrectly pitched voice)
Social skills differences (if you are concerned about your child in this area a heads up would be helpful)
Oral motor problems.
Fluency difficulties.
It is important to note that this is just a very brief screening and if you are concerned about your child with respect to any aspect of communication please do let the therapists know and they can have a closer look at areas that you have highlighted. There would be an additional charge for this. They are also able to work with your child if they have feeding or eating issues but this would need to be referred separately.
Please don't hesitate to contact the SLTs if you have any further questions and/or concerns.
