Please see below a message from the Board of Trustees

Dear Parents,

As you know over the past number of months the Board has been consulting in relation to the Religious Instruction programme that we currently offer to years 3-6. This extensive consultation has included parent surveys, a dedicated community evening for parents to discuss their opinions, as well as receiving feedback from the children, teachers and the St Johns Church.

The Board would like to thank everyone who participated in the process for their valuable input. Many issues were identified and discussed as part of our decision making process.

At our recent meeting the Board unanimously decided to remove Religious Instruction from the teaching and learning programme. The decision will enable an additional 30 minutes per week to be dedicated to the curriculum. The Board’s decision was made in the best interests of all children at Kaikorai Primary School.

Religious education on events such as Easter and Christmas is allowed to be taught in all New Zealand schools and therefore will continue to be part of the school programme when appropriate. In addition the Board, in consultation with St Johns Church, is pleased to confirm that a before school opt in Christian religious programme will begin next year. Details of this programme will be announced in the new year.

Kind regards

The Board of Trustees
