Banqer continues to be a very enjoyable tool that the senior classes are using to explore ideas of Financial Literacy.
All classes have been exploring the concepts of Financial Literacy. The class bank managers (teachers) have continued to deposit an amount of Banqer dollars into children's accounts for attendance each day. Deposits have also been earned for Xtramath and Mathletics achievements, and as rewards for work well done. Demonstrations of the KAIK values, and occasions when other adults have passed on compliments about something the children have done have also earned rewards.
Withdrawals have been used to purchase things the children have wanted to buy or hire within the classroom or the school. The ideas of income, expenditure and balance have been thoroughly practised.
It has been interesting to see how children's saving habits have changed over time. Some have become fierce savers, and some are now incorrigible spendthrifts. We hope this evens out as they become more used to handing money.
It has been great to see their enthusiasm continue at home too. Many parents have commented positively about this programme.
Auctions have been very popular with the children, where market demand has pushed the prices very high. A hire charge for a bean bag for just a morning in Room 1 can be as high as $120. Some children have even figured out that they can 'play' the market and push prices high by creating an artificial demand. Our month's trial ends soon, and we intend to have an opportunity to auction some extra items near the end.
We now look forward to Kaikville where we will develop our own businesses, earn a salary and have opportunities to purchase goods and services.
