Sustainability is our major focus this term, and we have all been starting by looking at events that highlight current issues.
Trash is a problem for everyone. Plastics are a really big problem. Just look in lunch boxes to see just how dependent many of us are in our use of plastics. Each class has started by learning about local, national and world wide events where plastics appear to be a problem.
Our first stage is to recognise and analyse where we are now, right here at school. From here classes have been learning about what is happening in the world. Some children's responses to the plight of the Norwegian whale have been very strong.
Pippa wrote: "Ask yourself if you drop some glad wrap and it blows away, where does it go? Well, it most likely goes into an animals stomach."
Adam wrote: "Why do we have pastic? It is killing whales, gulls and lots of other marine animals."
Emilia wrote: "I don't like it how a lot of the rubbish ends up in the ocean and the sea animals end up dying."
Smith wrote: "I feel sad for the poor whales. They're very intelligent animals, except they don't know that they are eating plastic. It's us that are causing them to die."
From a range of class lessons, children will develop their inquiries. These will include visits to the landfill, the art gallery and local places. We will also be working with a steam punk enthusiast who is going to run making workshops for each of our classes, where we will repurpose / reuse / recycle trash into art works and useful objects.
It promises to be a stimulating programme of learning for all of us.
