Welcome back!

Welcome back to returning students to Room 3 and a very warm welcome to those who are joining us in the Middles for the first time.

This summer has not been the greatest weather-wise although we have had some hot days in the lead up to coming back to school. I hope you have enjoyed your holidays and the time with your children. I’m sure they are ready to head back to school to learn and catch up with their friends. Starting out this term we will spend some time getting to know each other as a class and playing our new KAIK GO game that focuses on the school values, before moving onto our major concept of sustainability.

Parents often have questions about homework. In Room 3 you can expect your child to have a spelling sheet with lists of words to learn at home (testing will be done at school on Fridays), basic facts or a Maths work sheet and Reading. Children should spend no more than 20 minutes on homework each night. This term homework will start in a few weeks although it usually starts in Week 1. The last week of each term is a homework free week.

Some children will have a book from me to read every night and others will have a book from me two-three nights a week. On nights children don’t have a book from me they are expected to read for at least 10 minutes.

Those who receive a book every night should also spend time reading a book of their choice so that they are also reading for at least 10 minutes each night.

Some weeks there will be an extra task related to what we are learning in class.

“Extra for experts” is an alphabet themed research task that is an optional activity for children to complete and present in any way that they choose.

Please remember if you wish your child to be excused from homework or if it is unable to be completed to call, email or send a signed note to school.

Our library day is Thursday and children will need to return their books to class. It is helpful if school readers are returned to school quickly so that they can be returned and used by other classes.

This year we will have Mr. Tony Reid in our classroom every second Wednesday, and I know he is looking forward to spending time in all three syndicates through out the school.

If you would like to contact me, feel free to come in before or after school, email or call me at school. If you have an urgent message please be sure to call rather than e-mail.

Kind regards

Sarah Gilbert
