Room 10 News! Term 1

By Paula Fisher | Posted: Sunday February 4, 2018

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to Room10 – your child’s Year 1 class for 2018. We have a busy and exciting term ahead of us!

Our school concept for this term is: Relationships

Our school value for this term is: Kind

Inquiry

Our topics of inquiry for Term 1 are:

*Fill Your Bucket with Kindness

*I am a Zoologist

*Keeping Ourselves Safe

Library

Our library time this year is on a Friday at 9.00am-9.30am. Your child can take out two books from the library each week. These books need to be returned to the class library box in Room 10 by Friday morning.

Covering of Books

It would be beneficial for your child’s spelling notebook and homebook to be covered, as they are constantly in use between school and home.

Homework

In Year 1, the expectation is for only 10 minutes of homework per night, Monday to Thursday. This is made up of:

*Reading – a reading book at the appropriate level will come home Monday to Thursday. Please fill out the reading log at the front of your child’s homebook.

*Spelling – 5 spelling words will come home in your child’s spelling notebook on a Monday night.

Please get your child to practise each word, by writing them out a couple of times each on a scrap piece of paper. Why not try some different ways too! – writing spelling words in rice, writing their words with water and a paintbrush on the concrete, making their words with magnetic letters on the fridge, painting their words on paper, using a spelling app on the i-pad or finding the words in old magazines, are just a few examples of how your child can learn their spelling words in a fun way. These words will be tested on a Friday morning.

I am looking for a parent or two, who has a spare half an hour to an hour per week to help with spelling testing on a Friday morning. Please come and see me if you are able to be of assistance. Your support would be very much appreciated!

*Maths – your child is able to access ‘Mathletics’ at home. A few minutes of ‘Mathletics’ on a regular basis is very beneficial for consolidating and maintaining mathematical concepts taught in class. For easy access, ‘Mathletics’ passwords will be glued into the front of your child’s spelling notebook in the coming days.

Homework will begin this week in week 2.

Swimming

Swimming will not begin until Week 1 of Term 2 – starting on the 2nd May and taking place over 8 days.

Assembly

Room 10 has the privilege of hosting assembly in week 4 – Friday 23rd February. Another very important date to add to your diary!

Home/School Partnership

If you have any questions or concerns, please do pop into the classroom any day before school to have a chat. Alternatively, I am available after school on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons.
