Welcome back to school! I hope that you all managed to have a well earned break over the holidays. Here is what is happening this term in Room 10.
(KAIK) Values
Our school value for this term is 'Independent.'
*To work hard
*To make good decisions
*To look after their belongings
Inquiry Context
This term our whole school inquiry will be around the context of 'Significance.'
The junior syndicate will be looking at the big idea:
'Can one person make a difference?'
In Room 10, we will begin by looking at the importance of our families and family members, and how they play a significant role in our lives.
This will be followed on by inquiring about our cultures and how they play a very significant role in shaping us as people.
Further on from that, 'Miss T,' my student teacher, will be leading Room 10 in an inquiry about her Tongan culture, with lots of fun and practical learning experiences for the children.
Cultural Experience Sessions
I know that in Room 10, we have a number of different cultures represented in our class.
I am wanting to arrange some cultural experiences for my students, where parents or grandparents could come into Room 10 and assist me in providing some hands on activities for the students, based around their particular culture.
For example, The students could:
-Learn to write their name in a different language
-Listen to a traditional story
-Create a particular food dish
-Create a craft from that country
-Learn to speak a few simple words or phrases
If you have a little bit of extra time in your busy schedule, to come along and share about your families culture, I would be very interested to hear from you. Simply e-mail me or come and have a chat before or after school in Room 10.
Student Teacher
My student teacher, Ilaisipa Tahaafe, or known as 'Miss T' by the students, will be back this coming term. As well as being here for the first four Tuesdays of the term, Miss T will also have a posting in Room 10 from Thursday 23rd August through to Friday 21 September. During this time, Miss T will have 15 days of full responsibility for Room 10, with my guided support.
Homework
Once again, thank you for supporting your child with their learning at home. The partnership created between school and home is so important.
Our homework routines in Room 10 continue to be:
A reading book at your child's guided reading level - Monday to Thursday.
A new poem to share with you on a Friday. This is in their home book.
5-8 spelling words for the week, which go home on a Monday in their spelling notebook and are tested in class on a Friday morning.
Maths - Regular 'Mathletics' at home - which reinforces the skills that have been taught at school.
Please ensure that your child has their spelling notebook and home book in their bag every day. Also, that their reading diary, in the front of their home book, is filled out every night.
Communication
Please do not hesitate to contact me regarding any issues regarding your child. Or alternatively, come and have a chat before or after school in Room 10.
My e-mail address is:
It is also lovely to see parents popping in before or after school to have a look at their child's work around the room. You are most welcome!
Thank you for your valued and ongoing support,
