Relax Kids for Room 1 and 4

A new trial initiative.

Robin Hartley our former Deputy Principal conducted an extensive review last year into our students well being which highlighted an increasing number of children are presenting at school with high stress levels, anxiety and inability to self regulate.  With the support of the Parent Group we already fund the Chatbus but we also want to teach children to be their own ambulance at the top of the cliff.

We will be trialing a play-based programme (Relax Kids) to help children learn to notice how their thoughts, feelings and body interact, and how this influences their learning and behaviour.   We anticipate that this will benefit all children and not just those who have issues dealing with their anxieties.

During the sessions and follow-up classroom activities, children will:

  • become more independent in managing their emotions
  •  learn to recognise and understand the needs of others
  • develop conflict resolution skills
  • learn to manage their own stress effectively
  • learn strategies to help them concentrate and engage in learning

Classes will be facilitated by Karen Keppel, a Licensed Relax Kids coach and paediatric occupational therapist experienced in mental health and child development.  The sessions are for 30mins on a Wednesday afternoon and will last for 6 weeks.  We will be taking feedback from the students and hopefully parents before deciding whether to introduce to more classes.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

Kind regards
