Headlice

Unfortunately head lice has been identified in our school again. If we all work together we should be able to eradicate this problem.

We are asking all parents to examine their child’s hair and head for signs of lice or nits (eggs). Lice are hard to find as they move around the head. We are therefore suggesting that parents look for nits. Nits look very similar to dandruff and gather as tiny silver white eggs at the base of the hair shaft.

If any lice or nits are found, the child’s hair should be treated. Although the condition is frustrating, it is easily controlled with a specialised product available at your local pharmacy, or you could try the Natural Nit Oil below. This is an inexpensive, safe, oil based treatment that several families have found very effective against all stages of this troublesome parasite.

Please remind children to avoid rubbing heads and to keep long hair tied back.

The Southern District Health Board has provided us with a Head Lice guide for parents and caregivers. If you would like a copy please collect one from the office.

Thank you for your support.

Natural Nit Oil

86ml light olive oil or grape seed oil (oil coats and suffocates the lice and nits)

10ml citronella ( leaves a residual smell that nits avoid)

1ml tea tree oil (prevents infection in scratched bites)

3ml wintergreen oil (stops the itching, this isn’t essential)

It is essential to use lots so that there are no areas of scalp untreated.

Apply plenty of oil to the scalp and comb through hair with a fine toothed comb. Leave on for at least 12 hours - overnight is best, but protect your pillows with a towel. Comb thoroughly, wash with normal shampoo.
