Welcome to Term 3 in Room 1.

It is going to be a super busy, fun and engaging term in Room 1 - read on to find out all about it.

I hope you all had a great holiday and your child has settled back into school life this term.

Room 1 has started Mandarin lessons this term and will be building on previous years mandarin learning. Our focus will be basic greetings, knowledge about China, counting and the number system, talking about our family and Chinese culture. We have had one session already and I am super impressed with the engagement and willingness to get involved in something new.

The Year 6 crew had a neat morning down at Balmac on Wednesday. They experienced some of the tech classes such as fabrics, hard materials, art, tech in the Camlab,  and food technology.  Sara Quelch the Deputy Principal will be visiting us on Monday and giving information about the enrolment process, opportunities at Balmac and the open night. Your Year 6 child will receive a Balmacewen Intermediate prospectus on Monday and will bring this home for you to peruse.

Our big learning focus for this term is How can we tell our story - Kaikorai turns 150! What an exciting time. The learning will be a social sciences focus - the history of Dunedin, Kaikorai Primary School, creating an exhibition piece for our 150 reunion (Week 3, Term 4), and of course telling a story from our past for our school production - Week 9 of this term.

We have a visit to the Toitu - Early Settlers museum on Monday of Week 4, 12th August. Our visit will centre around schooling in the past, Dunedin and Otago history and drama activities. If you would like to come along, please let me know.

As you may have seen in the last newsletter, ICAS exams are coming up in this term.  We offer science, maths and english exams. If this is something that is of interest please don't hesitate to get in touch.

We have the Hills Cluster cross country in Week 3 where we take 30  Year 4 - 5-6 pupils to Balmacewen Intermediate to run against other schools in our cluster. Next week we will be heading down to Balmac to help with our selection process. Success at the Hills Cluster race determines selection for the Otago Champs in Week 6.

Lastly, please get in touch if you can help out with or have an expertise in any forms of dance or drama, Dunedin history or showcasing information - we would love to hear from you.

As always, thank you for your support.
