School Orienteering

By Felicia Ward | Posted: Saturday February 13, 2021

The last event for the school orienteering summer series is Wednesday the 25th of March at Opoho Park.

Starts are from 5.15-6 pm. Courses close at 7 pm.

The Event Centre will be the carpark of the old Alhambra RFC building, corner of Lovelock Ave & Signal Hill Rd. There is limited parking in this carpark, but enough to drop people off then park elsewhere, like along Warden St on the eastern side only, or on Lovelock Ave. The closed-off end of upper Opoho Rd would be a good place to park - you'll just need to cross Signal Hill Rd to get to the Event Centre.

We are permitted to use the Northern Cemetery for this event, on condition that absolute respect to gravesites is observed by all competitors, just like in the Southern Cemetery at last Sunday's event. This means no crossing of any concrete edge of a grave, even if it doesn't have a headstone or fence, or you think you could jump across it. Grave sites or blocks of graves are olive green colour on the map. The DCC have been assured that orienteers will strictly adhere to these rules. Anyone not observing these rules risks jeopardising our future use of this beautiful area. Parents/teachers - you are responsible for ensuring your young children know only to run on paths, grassy tracks or through white or green forest, and that they know what these look like on the map.
If you are seen jumping over a grave you will be disqualified - there will be a marshall in the cemetery watching out.

Likewise, we are grateful to Dunedin Botanic Gardens for permission to use Lovelock Bush for Orange/Long Orange courses. Respect for native vegetation needs to be observed here.

The Cotter family need helpers for this event to ensure it runs smoothly.2 people on caravan from 4.30-6pm3 people on the start from 5-6pm2 people on the finish from 5.15-6.15pmA couple of experienced club members to help newcomers from 4.45-5.30pm
Control collectors from 7pmPlease contact Jim Cotter at [email protected] if you can assist.
Bring cash, a pen to fill in your clipcard, and some elastic/string to tie it on to your wrist, so it doesn't get lost in the bush. Wear grippy shoes - some bush tracks might be muddy

A reminder: Please do not come to the event if you are unwell, and ensure you scan the event QR code at the caravan.
4 courses available, including a Long Orange - this course is for experienced, reasonably fit adult club members only. It is 3.7km (as the crow files) with 200m climb. Start early enough to finish by 7pm. It will be getting quite dim in the bush sections by this time.
